Myrmecia
The genus Myrmecia, commonly known as bull ants or jack jumper ants, is a group of large, aggressive ants native to Australia and New Guinea. These ants are notable for their impressive size, with some species reaching over 2.5 cm in length. Myrmecia ants are characterized by their powerful mandibles, large eyes, and a potent sting, which they use both for hunting and defense. They have excellent vision, capable of detecting movement up to a meter away, which is unusual for ants.
Myrmecia ants are solitary hunters, feeding on other insects and small animals. Unlike many other ant species, they do not rely heavily on pheromone trails to find food. Their nests are usually located underground, and the colonies are generally smaller compared to other ant genera, typically consisting of a few hundred individuals. Due to their aggressive nature and painful sting, Myrmecia ants are well-known and can be dangerous to humans, particularly those who are allergic to their venom.
