Ponera

The genus Ponera consists of small, cryptic ants commonly referred to as trap-jaw ants, although this name is more frequently associated with other genera (Odontomachus). Ponera ants are typically found in leaf litter, soil, or under stones, primarily in forests or other shaded environments. These ants are characterized by their small size, usually less than 5 mm, and their dark brown or black coloration. Ponera ants have a relatively simple social structure, with small colonies that often contain fewer than 100 workers. They are known for their predatory behavior, feeding primarily on small invertebrates. The ants in this genus have a stinger, which they use for both hunting and defense.
